St Swithuns CE Primary School

Sustainability

One of the four curriculum pillars at St Swithun’s is embracing “a sustainable future”, ensuring that we are teaching children to think about the wellbeing of all forever.

Sustainability is embedded throughout the curriculum right from Nursery all the way up to Year 6. In the Early Years and Foundation Stage, children share how to look after our world and learn how to respect the outdoor area. The children visit the woods every week to gain an appreciation of our local natural environment.

In Key Stage 1, across a range of subjects including geography, science and English, children learn about animals and plants, microhabitats and food chains. In Key Stage 2, they build on this knowledge of the natural world to explore topics such as oceans and rivers, deforestation, energy, and wildlife. Throughout the school, quality texts support sustainability teaching and learning.
